Name tracing generator

Name Tracing Generator

Type a name, choose a letter style, and print a full page of tracing practice. The worksheet is built in your browser — free, no signup, and nothing uploaded.

Quick start

How to make a name tracing worksheet

01

Enter the name

Type a first name, a full name, or a nickname into the box. The preview updates with every letter, so there is no guesswork.

02

Choose letters and style

Pick print or cursive letters, then choose dashed, faded, or hollow tracing. Dashed gives the most support; faded is a step toward writing alone.

03

Print or save a PDF

Print directly, or choose Save as PDF in the print dialog. The page is full US Letter size, with no watermark and no cut-off edges.

What you get

One page, three levels of support

The worksheet is designed to move a child from copying to writing independently — without needing a second printout.

Model row

See the whole name

The first row is a solid model, repeated across the line, so the child can see the letter shapes and spacing before tracing.

Tracing rows

Follow the outline

Five rows use your chosen tracing style on handwriting guide lines. The dashed midline shows where lowercase letters sit.

Blank row

Try it alone

The last row has guide lines but no letters. It is the “you try it” step, and it keeps the whole lesson on one sheet.

Print or cursive?

Choose the alphabet that fits the child

Both are included in the same generator. If you are unsure, start with print and move to cursive when the child is comfortable forming every letter.

Printing tips

Get a clean page the first time

  • Print at 100%. In the print dialog, set Scale to 100% or Actual size. Turning on “fit to printable area” can shrink the guide lines.
  • US Letter is the default. The page is designed at 8.5 × 11 inches. On A4 paper, choose Fit to page so nothing clips at the edge.
  • Use the blank row last. The top model row and the tracing rows build confidence; the blank row is the independent attempt.
  • Reuse a copy. Print on cardstock and slip it into a dry-erase pocket for repeated practice with a marker.
  • One name per page. For a class list, print one page per child. Each page takes a few seconds: change the name, print, repeat.

Questions

Name tracing questions

Is the name tracing generator free?

Yes. The generator and the printed worksheet are free, with no account, no watermark, and no limit on how many copies you print.

Can I make a worksheet for a long name?

Yes. Short names repeat across each line. Long names are scaled to fit the page width, so a full name or a hyphenated name still fits on one row.

Should I choose print or cursive letters?

Print letters are easiest for preschoolers and early kindergarten, when each letter is learned on its own. Cursive letters suit children who are ready for connected handwriting, often grade 2 and up. You can switch styles at any time.

Can I save the name tracing worksheet as a PDF?

Yes. Choose Print, then select Save as PDF in your browser's print dialog. The PDF is US Letter size and ready to email or print later.

Does the generator work on a phone or tablet?

Yes. The preview adapts to the screen, and printing uses your device's normal print dialog. If your phone can print or save a PDF, it can print the worksheet.

Is the name I type stored anywhere?

No. The worksheet is generated in your browser. The name never leaves your device and is not stored on a server.
